People with Parkinson's disease in Cornwall to benefit from Duchy Health Charity Grant

A grant from the Duchy Health Charity to the James Parkinson Centre Cornwall is set to help improve the lives of people living with Parkinson’s disease in the county.

JPC organises ‘Hub’ meetings for people who have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and for their carers. These are information-giving and social meetings where people can meet with a Parkinson’s disease nurse specialist as well as obtain information about living healthily. The meetings held in Threemilestone, Camborne, St Austell and Pensilva are proving to be so popular that a centre coordinator is needing to be employed.

The Duchy Health Charity has given a grant of £15,000 to JPC to enable the employment of a Hub coordinator for its Hub meetings.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the James Parkinson Centre, Sue Thomas, said, “This is a fantastic boost for JPC. The Hubs have become so popular we could not have maintained their growth without paid staff. There are around 1500 people in Cornwall with Parkinson’s disease who need support. So far we have relied on volunteers from Rotary Club and Inner Wheel members across Cornwall but in order to expand we needed paid support”.

Sally Jane Coode, the DHC’s Chair of Grants added, “The Duchy Health Charity is delighted to help the James Parkinson Centre expand its operations in Cornwall, and hopes that it will mean many more people in the county with Parkinson's Disease will benefit from this trailblazing initiative."

The Duchy Health Charity was formed in 1990 in order to use the invested £3.5 million proceeds from the sale of the private Duchy Hospital to benefit the health, care and wellbeing of the people of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Since then it has granted more than £6 million to charities and organisations involved in this area of work.

From substantial contributions to the Sunrise Centre Appeal, to the Parents and Children Together Project, the Charity supports a diverse range of work. It has provided almost £700,000 over the last ten years for the Cornwall Dermatology Research Project into the treatment of skin cancers, now taken on by the Peninsula Medical School.

It also aims to increase understanding of health trends within the community by sponsoring seminars which focus on important issues of social and medical care. From the 2006 seminar exploring health issues for the county’s young people emerged the partnership project for Integrated Health Centres – now being piloted at schools in Bude, Hayle and Truro. The centre at Penair School was opened this summer by the Charity’s Patron HRH The Duke of Cornwall.

Now the DHC is glad to be supporting people with Parkinson’s in the county through the ‘Hubs’, which are held at four centres across Cornwall:-

Threemilestone Methodist Hall, Truro

Cuddra WI Hall, St Austell

Millennium House, Pensilva, Liskeard

All Saints Church Hall, Tuckingmill, Camborne
