In Cornwall every year there will be around 55 new people diagnosed with PD of which 8 -10 will be under 60 years of age, some will be under 40.
The James Parkinson Centre Cornwall is a Cornish based Charity which aims to improve service provision for People with Parkinson's.
It does this through mutually beneficial partnerships to ensure People with Parkinson's, and their Carers, have information and access to health and social care service provision to enable their independence.
Every year, Parkinson's UK hosts the Mervyn Peake Awards, to celebrate the creativity of people with Parkinson's disease. Mervyn Peake illustrated Alice in Wonderland, amongst others, and was also someone who had Parkinson's disease. The awards started in 2002 and look for entries from people with Parkinson's who excel at painting, poetry and photography.
One of our Threemilestone Hub members, the budding artist Bob Mansbridge, has succeeded in having his original artwork selected as a 'Commended Entry' at this year's awards ceremony, held at Westminster Cathedral Hall on 9th July. There were over 300 works submitted for this year's awards, and Bob said " I was impressed with the standard of work and the general feeling of optimism amongst the entrants.
His painting, 'The Magic Tree," will be featured in the 2011 Parkinson's UK Calendar which is already available for pre-order from Parkinson's UK. Bob is now Mr January and his painting is to appear alongside entries from the poetry and photography sections of the awards. His certificate was presented by Sebastian Peake, son of the late Mervyn Peake, and Joanne Harris, the author of a number of bestsellers, including Chocolat.

Well done to Bob on this excellent achievement and if there are any other artists, poets or photograhers among you, perhaps you may like to think about entering next year's competition! For more information on the awards, please contact Parkinson's UK or take a look at their website, or take a look at Sebastian Peake's blog. More pictures of the event will be put onto Flickr soon, so watch this space.
Rotary Club of Truro donated the proceeds of their 2009 May Ball to the James Parkinson Centre. JPC has received a donation of £5,625. This shows an amazing amount of support for our Hubs, for which we are very grateful.
